Vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. on Tuesday told the public to not be complacent in following public health guidelines even as the country’s Covid-19 cases remained low, due to the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

“Ang ating key message is do not underestimate Omicron,” Galvez said in a “Talk to the People” address of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Galvez said the government would “revisit” the playbook it had used to minimize the spread of the Delta variant that caused widespread infections earlier this year.

“Preparation is very key, kailangan tingnan natin kung ano ‘yung nagawa natin na maganda para at least, mapaghandaan natin ang Omicron,” Galvez added.

The vaccine czar said the Philippines would strictly enforce masking protocols, increase testing and implement its trace-isolate-treat strategy, and “massively” vaccinate.

Galvez assured the public that border control was stringent.

Omicron, or the B.1.1.529 variant, has been declared a variant of concern by the WHO.

It was first detected in South Africa.
