What’s going on between President Rodrigo Duterte and his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio?

Palace spokesman Harry Roque on Thursday asked the public to give the the two Dutertes “breathing space” until they finalize their plans for the 2022 national elections.

Duterte recently declared that he would seek the vice presidency in 2022 to “continue the crusade,” or his fight against insurgency, criminality and illegal drugs.

Sara would later reveal that Duterte had talked to her and pushed her to either endorse the Go-Duterte tandem or take in Go as her vice president, and hit the two for involving her in their decision.

“I strongly suggest to the president and (Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go) to own up publicly their decision to run as a tandem. If they can confirm it privately, then I do not see the reason why they cannot be candid about it to the public,” the presidential daughter said.

Roque earlier said that the president talked about his daughter’s political plans during his recent Talk to the Nation address but was edited out by the Radio Television Malacañang.

“The matter involved discussions involving family members. So, that was another consideration, that whoever edited it thought that the matter is a family matter and should be left between father and daughter,” Roque said.

Roque said Duterte’s latest pronouncement, after Sara’s statement, was that he would still seek the vice presidency.

“As of 5:46 kahapon po ng hapon, ito po ang huling mensahe ng presidente tungkol sa isyu ng pulitika: Things are clear now, I will run as vice president,” Roque said, reading a message from the president. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
