CLAIM: Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration acquired the country’s first-ever satellite.

RATING: FALSE

A Tiktoker falsely claimed in his caption that Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration brought the country’s first-ever satellite.

The Agila satellite that the Marcos administration acquired is the country’s first internet satellite but it is not the country’s first satellite.

The Philippines’ first satellite, Agila 1 or Mabuhay, was launched on March 20, 1987. It was formerly owned by an Indonesian company and was bought by the Mabuhay Satellite Corporation under PLDT in 1996.

Meanwhile, the first Filipino-made microsatellite in space was the PHL microsat or Diwata 1.

The Tiktok video has so far gained more than 400,000 views, 15,900 likes, and more than 680 comments. Roselyn Dapiton
