CLAIM: House Speaker Martin Romualdez filed a case against former president Rodrigo Duterte.

RATING: FALSE

The title of a YouTube video uploaded by a channel named IDOY CALOY TV falsely claimed that House Speaker Martin Romualdez had filed a case against former president Rodrigo Duterte.

The specific case in the misleading video is not explicitly mentioned in the title.

The content of the video linked it to the House resolutions backing an International Criminal Court (ICC)  investigation against Duterte. But Romualdez did not personally file any such resolution against Duterte.

House Bill 1477, which urges the government to cooperate with the ICC, was filed by Manila Rep. Benny Abante, the chairperson of the House Committee on Human Rights, and 1-Rider partylist Rep. Ramon Gutierrez, who belongs to the minority bloc.

Another measure, HR 1393, was introduced by party-list representatives France Castro of ACT Teachers, Raoul Manuel of Kabataan, and Arlene Brosas of Gabriela. HR 1482 was submitted by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman.

All three resolutions urge the government to work with the ICC’s investigation into the alleged crimes against humanity committed during the Duterte administration’s drug war.

The official record indicates 6,000 deaths in police operations in Duterte’s “war on drugs.” However, human rights organizations estimate that the actual number may be as high as 30,000. Angeline Narnola
