CLAIM: Social pensions for Senior citizens have been enacted into law.
RATING: FALSE
A Tiktok video featuring Philippine lawmaker Stella Quimbo’s audio discussing her proposal for a universal pension for senior citizens was misleadingly edited, falsely claiming that the proposal had been enacted into law.
The video posted by user @hashedonlineshop has the caption “Bagong batas para sa lahat ng senior citizen,” and the user also replied to the comments, “ngayon lang na approved.”
The audio used misleadingly drew from Quimbo’s full speech posted by the official YouTube channel of the House of Representatives on May 15 explaining the bill and the purpose of the measure.
The House of Representatives approved its version of the bill following a third and final reading on May 21.
Following the House of Representatives’ approval of the bill, Quimbo shared excerpts of the speech on her Facebook page with a caption, “Sama-sama po natin itong tutukan sa Senado at hanggang maging opisyal na batas.”
While a version of the bill has indeed made progress in the House of Representatives, it has not yet been enacted, as it still requires approval from both chambers before it can reach the President’s desk to become law. Mery-anne Alejandre
