CLAIM: Vice President Sara Duterte went to the United States after she was invited to the inauguration of Donald Trump.
RATING: FALSE
A TikTok user falsely claimed that Vice President Sara Duterte was in the United States after supposedly being invited by Donald Trump to attend his inauguration.
In a now-deleted post, the TikTok user shared a photo of Duterte with US Ambassador to the Philippines Mary Kay L. Carlson, falsely suggesting that it was taken in the US.
The photo was originally taken at the US Embassy in the Philippines, where Duterte paid a courtesy call to express her condolences over the passing of the late former US president James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr.
The post was shared following rumors that Duterte and her father, ex-president Rodrigo Duterte, were invited to Trump’s inauguration.
Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the US on Jan. 20, and there were no reports indicating that Duterte was invited by Trump or attended the event.
A check of Duterte’s official Facebook page and the official Facebook page of the Office of the Vice President confirmed that she did not travel to the US.
