CLAIM: Rep. Antolin “Lenlen” Oreta of Malabon saying he doesn’t care if Vice President Sara Duterte feels unsafe, and wishing for her death.
RATING: FALSE
A fake quote misattributed to Rep. Antolin “Lenlen” Oreta of Malabon, where he allegedly said he did not care about Vice President Sara Duterte’s safety and wished for her death, gained traction on Facebook amid Duterte’s recent arrest warrant over charges of grave threats.
Flagged content: The fake quote graphic was posted by a Facebook page named “Malabon Standard,” with a caption claiming Oreta was facing public criticism due to his statement about Duterte.
- The fake quote misattributed to Oreta reads, “Wala akong pake kung you do not feel safe Inday Sara, sana mamatay ka na.”
- The fake graphic also bore a photo of Oreta that looks like a screenshot from a livestreamed legislative hearing due to its image quality.
Our debunk: Oreta confirmed to PressOne.PH that the viral quote card attributed to him was fake.
- A check of the House of Representatives official website and the previous hearing attended by Oreta yielded no record of him making such a statement.
- Oreta also addressed the issue on his official Facebook page clarifying that he did not make the statement attributed to him by “Malabon Standard.”
Rewind: On Sept. 4, Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 98 ordered Duterte’s arrest over three counts of grave threats.
- Duterte posted bail the following day, where she made the statement about her safety.
Why we fact-checked this: As of this writing, the fake quote card has amassed 110,500 reactions, 48,100 comments, and 4,100 shares.
- Most in the comment section believed the quote was real, and it was widely shared across different Facebook groups.
Spot the fake: Official news organizations would have covered a statement or issue like this, so it’s better to cross-check information you see on social media against news outlets.
- Be cautious of Facebook pages that pose as “news pages.” Not all of them are credible, so always verify their content before trusting or sharing it. Leigh San Diego
