CLAIM: Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle confronted Pope Francis in a debate about God.

RATING: FALSE

A YouTube video falsely claimed that Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle had debated Pope Francis about God.

A  “theological confrontation” supposedly occurred between the Filipino cardinal and the pontiff during a conference at the Vatican.

The video stitched photos and video stills that made it look like the pope and Tagle were exchanging heated words.

However, these were taken from Tagle’s presentation back in February 2019 wherein he addressed the alleged abuse of minors by some ordained ministers of the Roman Catholic Church.

In the entirety of his presentation, there was no recorded confrontation between the two Church figures.

Similarly, the snapshots of the pope speaking were taken from one of his audiences in the Clementine Hall at the Vatican.

In his June 2024 address before some famous comedians, Pope Francis appeared in front of a maroon backdrop adorned with the papal insignia, similar to the one used in the video.

As of writing, there were no known accounts that Pope Francis had engaged in any public theological debate. Hurt Allauigan
