CLAIM: President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. bought a ship from the United States worth $2.9 billion.
RATING: FALSE
A Facebook user falsely claimed that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. had purchased a ship from the United States worth $2.9 billion.
The Facebook reel showed a video and some photos of the ship with an edited text that falsely implied that the Philippines had already acquired the vessel.
A reverse image search revealed that the ship in the video is the USS Gerald R. Ford.
The original uploader of the video cannot be traced. However, another angle of the video was uploaded by a Tiktok user on May 30, 2024.
On Jan. 17, 2024, the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group completed its eight-month deployment in the Mediterranean Sea, which was their recent operation.
The official Facebook page of the USS Gerald R. Ford has been active in posting updates about the aircraft carrier, and the ship is not for sale. Leigh San Diego
