FACT-CHECK: Finance guru tagged in fake article promoting crypto scams

Oct 14, 2024 | Business, Fact Checked by PressOnePH

CLAIM: Chinkee Tan was found guilty of supposed allegations against him.

RATING: FALSE

Questionable sponsored posts on Facebook have surfaced anew, this time alleging that a known financial coach was found guilty of certain charges.

The post’s caption read: “The allegations against Chinkee Tan have been confirmed,” and came with a news card purportedly from GMA News.

The photo mentioned that Tan “did not know that his microphone was on,” implying that he had uttered statements that led to his arrest.

However, there was no evidence that Tan was involved in a lawsuit or violated any law, nor was he arrested.

The article, when clicked, will show a fake GMA News Online page bearing the headline: “The Central Bank of the Philippines sues Chinkee Tan over statements he made on live television.”

It also contained a malicious promotion of a crypto currency platform luring unsuspecting readers to invest.

This was similar to a previously fact-checked claim that involved business tycoon Lance Gokongwei in September.

Tan has debunked the claim on his official Facebook page, slamming those behind the fraud.

We also put the photo under the scrutiny of deepfake detection site TrueMedia.org, which found strong indications of manipulation. Hurt Allauigan
