Claim: Cory Aquino cheated massively in the 1986 snap elections
Facebook page “Rodante Marcoleta Supporters Live” falsely claimed in a video that the late president Cory Aquino cheated big time during the 1986 snap election.
The video, a flipped version of a vlog by the Youtuber “Idol Caloy,” contained a clickbait caption: “PANG-AAKUSA NI BALLSY NA MANDARAYA SI PBBM AGAD BUMALIK SA KANYA, CORY MAS TOTOONG NANDAYA NONG 1986.”
“Ballsy Aquino, maluha-luha dahil pinamukha sa kanyang mas malaking madaraya ang kanyang inang si Cory Aquino,” claimed the video’s intro, referring to Aquino’s eldest child, Ballsy Aquino-Cruz.
Yet the Aug. 29 video, which has logged in 5,000 views, offered not one iota of incontrovertible proof that Aquino cheated massively during the 1986 election, let alone that Ballsy Aquino was teary-eyed at being told that her mother had committed massive election fraud.
It was in fact the camp of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos who committed large-scale fraud in 1986. That’s according to a team of 44 independent foreign election observers from 19 countries.
“The electoral anomalies which we have witnessed are serious and could well have an impact upon the final result,” the observers said in a statement, which was reported by the New York Times on Feb 10, 1986, days after the election.
“Occurrences of vote-buying, intimidation and lack of respect for electoral procedures were present,” they said.
The observers also found no incidents of cheating committed by Aquino’s side.
“The above-listed violations were perpetrated by national and local officials who supported the Marcos-Tolentino ticket. While we cannot exclude the possibility, our delegation did not observe a single election code violation by supporters of the opposition party despite efforts undertaken to monitor their activities,” the 350-page report said.
