FACT-CHECK: Duterte’s jail joke not meant for Revilla

Oct 15, 2024 | Fact Checked by PressOnePH

CLAIM: Former President Rodrigo Duterte said that he would bring Sen. Bong Revilla back to jail.

RATING: FALSE

A TikTok user posted a spliced video that falsely implied that Sen. Bong Revilla was the person ex-President Rodrigo Duterte had referred to as someone he would send back to jail.

The manipulated content used two video clips and a separate audio clip to misleadingly suggest that Duterte was questioning Revilla’s speech.

The clip of Revilla promoting the new program of the Marcos administration was taken from the Facebook live broadcast of Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair.

Revilla said in the video, “ngayon lang nangyari yan sa ating bansa, itong ganitong klaseng programa na talagang nararamdaman ng ating mga kababayan kaya palakpakan natin ang ating mahal na Pangulong Bongbong at Speaker Martin Romualdez,” which drew negative reactions from Duterte supporters.

(This is the first time something like this has happened in our country—a program that our countrymen can truly feel, so let’s give a round of applause to our beloved President Bongbong and Speaker Martin Romualdez.)

The original clip of Duterte was recorded during a media conference before the then president left for a trip to Vietnam in 2016.

In the audio clip where he uttered the words “Balik kita sa kulungan” (I will put you back in jail), Duterte was referring to former President Joseph Estrada.

Duterte cracked a joke after Estrada, supposedly called him “low class.”

As of writing, the spliced video has amassed 668,700 views, 22,100 reactions, 9,359 comments, and 2,837 shares on TikTok. Leigh San Diego
