CLAIM: The Chinese military has finally left the West Philippine Sea.
RATING: FALSE
A Facebook user posted a video of a speed boat with people onboard and a Chinese flag, and falsely claimed that the Chinese military has finally left the West Philippine Sea.
The Facebook reel was superimposed with the caption “natakot din [si]la” (they were scared), which falsely suggested that the footage was real.
The original uploader of the video used in the reel cannot be found, however.
Several reports from the Philippine Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirm that Chinese activity persists in the West Philippine Sea.
On Aug. 20, National Maritime Council spokesperson Alexander Lopez said in Malacañang that Chinese coast guard ships had intercepted and caused damage to two PCG vessels near Escoda Shoal.
On Aug. 31, multiple Chinese coast guard vessels and maritime forces surrounded BRP Teresa Magbanua near Escoda Shoal.
The PCG spokesperson on the West Philippine Sea, Commodore Jay Tarriela, said that when the Chinese forces detected the movement of PCG vessels, additional Chinese coast guard vessels arrived to surround our ship.
The latest report of the Philippine Navy stated that 207 Chinese ships had been monitored in the West Philippine Sea during Sept. 3 to 9, the highest record this year.
As of writing, the video has drawn 195,000 views on Facebook. Leigh San Diego
