CLAIM: Elreen Ando, one of the Philippines’s weightlifting bets, has won the country’s first gold in this year’s Paris Olympics.

A viral Facebook post falsely claimed that Elreen Ando, the Philippines’s representative to the Olympic weightlifting women’s 59 kg category, had won the first gold medal for the country.
The false announcement has drawn more than 40,000 reactions, 8,000 comments, and around 2,000 shares.
However, Ando has not competed yet for the category as the event is scheduled for Aug. 8.
The weightlifting events will be among the last to be held in the 2024 Paris Olympics, spanning the Games’ last five days.
Contrary to the claim, Carlos Yulo was the Filipino Olympian who actually scored the country’s first two gold medals in Paris after acing the men’s individual floor exercises and vault apparatus.
As of writing, there were still a number of Filipino athletes in contention to earn more medals, among them were: Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas (women’s boxing), Bianca Pagdanganan and Dottie Ardina (women’s golf).
The Filipino weightlifters’ will be competing on the following schedules: Ando, Aug. 8; John Ceniza (Men’s 61kg), Aug. 7; and Vanessa Sarno (Women’s 71kg), Aug. 10. John Hurt Allauigan
