The use of face shields in public transport and private establishments in areas under Alert Level 1 to 3 is voluntary, officials said on Tuesday.

In his first Malacañan briefing, acting Palace spokesman Karlo Nograles said the use of face shields in private establishments would be up to “personal choice.”

“For establishments, they’ll have to follow ano iyong protocols natin – na it’s purely voluntary for the users ng face shield. Ibig sabihin personal choice po iyan, personal choice po ng—kung gusto mong gumamit ng face shield pagdating sa [Alert] Level 1, 2 and 3,” he said.

A memorandum issued by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea stated that face shields were only required in Alert Level 5 areas.

For areas under Alert Level 4, the requirement of face shields was up to local government units and private establishments.

The Department of Transportation said the new face shield policy would apply in public transport.

Face shields remain mandatory in medical and quarantine facilities, and for healthcare workers in healthcare settings. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
