Former Senate president Juan Ponce Enrile on Tuesday took his oath as the chief legal counsel of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Enrile, 98, was among the key figures who helped oust the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1986. He supported Marcos Jr.’s presidential bid.

Marcos Jr. said in a statement that he had full trust in Enrile with his rich experience in government work.

“Buo ang tiwala ko sa kakayahan at karanasan ni Enrile bilang lingkod-bayan kaya naman umaasa ako na lalong mapabubuti ang pagbibigay ng legal assistance patungkol sa mga magiging aksyon ng ating administrasyon,” he said.

Under Marcos Sr., Enrile served as interim finance secretary from 1966 to 1968, justice secretary from 1968 to 1970, and defense chief from 1972 to 1986.

He served as the 21st Senate president from 2008 to 2013.

He announced his retirement from politics in 2016 but was announced chief presidential legal counsel in June 2022. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
