President Rodrigo has backpedaled on his plan to retire in 2022 as he filed his certificate of candidacy for senator (COC) on Monday.

Duterte’s decision came a day after his allies said he would run for vice president in 2022 as running-mate of his long-time aide, Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.

The president will run under the Pederalismo ng Dugong Dakilang Samahan (PDDS) party, substituting for Liezl Visorde.

PDP-Laban secretary general Melvin Matibag said Duterte’s decision to run under PDDS was to avoid the legal complications of there being two factions of the ruling party.

“The PDP-Laban – PDDS alliance is further strengthened by President Duterte’s decision to file his COC for senator,” he told reporters.

Duterte earlier said he would run for vice president once his presidency ends to ensure the continuity of his administration’s projects, a move critics said was the president’s escape clause from suit.

But in October, Duterte said he would no longer seek a national post as many Filipinos believed it was a violation of the Constitution.
