#DuterteManyak became the top hashtag on Twitter Monday afternoon after a video taken during President Rodrigo Duterte’s birthday celebration, showing the chief executive making a sexual advance toward his maid, spread across social media.

Duterte celebrated his 78th birthday in Davao on Sunday.

‘No malice’

Defending the president, Palace spokesman Harry Roque said there was no malice in Duterte’s sexual advance.

“Iyong sinasabi mong panghihipo, e matagal na niyang kasambahay iyon e. Alam mo naman talagang palabiro ang ating presidente pero wala pong malisya iyon dahil nakaharap naman po doon si Ma’am Honeylet.”

Roque was referring to Honeylet Avanceña, the partner of Duterte.

Roque also slammed critics of Duterte’s “simple” birthday celebration.

“Ang favorite word ko po ngayon ‘utak talangka.’ Kaninang umaga po unang ginamit ko iyong utak talangka sa mga pumupula diyan kay presidente. Ano pa bang gusto ninyong selebrasyon ng isang nakaupong presidente? Ang tanging nandoon lang sa selebrasyon niya, immediate members of his family, mga kasambahay,” he said.

Duterte’s aide, Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go, posted on social media a photo of the president blowing a candle on top of a cup of rice, which drew mixed reactions from netizens.

Earlier this month, Duterte issued a statement commemorating women’s month.

“While there is still much to be done to completely free women from this bondage of inequality, we can nonetheless proudly claim that concrete, sustainable, and inclusive actions have been taken by our government to create an environment where women’s rights are respected and their contributions to society are recognized,” Duterte said.

Duterte has repeatedly drawn backlash from women’s groups for his misogynistic remarks and actions. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
