President Rodrigo Duterte revealed on Wednesday he was seriously considering running for the vice presidency in 2022.

In a meeting with PDP-Laban officials in Malacañang, Duterte said he also wanted his successor to be a friend of his.

“To the proposition that I run for vice president, medyo I’m sold to the idea. So meaning to say, I am seriously thinking of running for vice president,” he said to the applause of his party mates.

To not become an “inutile” vice president, Duterte said he wanted the next president to be “a friend of mine whom I can work with.”

But the 76-year-old president said he would be willing to cooperate even if an opposition candidate wins the presidency.

“Pero somehow kung nandiyan ako, I will find a way to be productive and just see to it that the
Filipinos are not really pushed to the wall. Ano lang, kung ano lang magawa natin,” he said.

Duterte, since being pushed by PDP-Laban members in May to vie for the vice presidency, has mostly been indecisive about his future plans.

The PDP-Laban adopted a resolution that, aside from urging Duterte to run for vice president, gave him the freedom to choose the party’s standard-bearer in the 2022 national elections.
