President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said the Land Transportation Office (LTO) would issue drivers’ licenses with 10-year validity in all of its offices nationwide by December 2021.

In his “Talk to the People” address, Duterte said these licenses were “for the long haul.”

“Ang lisensiya…is good for 10 years, wala nang renewal-renewal na madalian. You have 10 years to drive. Baka hindi mo maubos ‘yang period na ‘yan. Ten years—it’s a long haul,” he said.

The LTO started rolling out the 10-year licenses on Oct. 28.

Metro Manila offices of the LTO began issuing the 10-year licenses today, Nov. 3.

Duterte in 2017 signed Republic Act (RA) 10930, which extended the validity period of drivers’ licenses to 10 years for drivers without violations.

Drivers are also now required to take the comprehensive driver’s education program examination before they renew their licenses. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
