The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has urged the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) to establish more bike facilities in schools in preparation for the opening of classes.

In a statement, Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista said students, teachers and other school employees should be empowered to utilize cycling as their primary mode of transportation.

“The establishment of the EoT (end-of-trip) facilities, which include parking spaces for bicycles— sheds, bike racks, as well as showers, will encourage students, teachers, and other school personnel to use existing bicycle lanes,” he said.

The DOTr has also appealed to the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Land Transportation Office to deploy additional traffic enforcers and marshals at school zones.

More than 21 million students have enrolled for school year 2022-2023.

Basic education classes will start on Aug. 22.

Schools will be required to implement five-day-a-week in-person classes by Nov. 2. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
