Department of Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra announced that he is mulling the extension of the lockdown of the DOJ’s main office in Manila after the agency reported 17 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections.

“We may have to extend the temporary lockdown of the DOJ premises unless the rising transmission rate is arrested,” he said. “We have a total of 45 active cases now, and I’m getting alarmed.”

All of the new Covid-19 cases reported came from the Witness Protection Program.

“The new ones are housed in one building only. They are asymptomatic except for one, and they have all been isolated,” he said.

The Justice chief earlier imposed a lockdown at the DOJ office from March 12 to 16. He reinstated it on Friday with the majority of its employees allowed to work from home until March 23.

Meanwhile, a skeleton staff has been stationed at the office to receive documents and attend to other frontline services. Ronald dela Cruz
