The town of Loreto in Dinagat Islands has adopted strategies to ensure food security while boosting farmers’ income.

Mayor Doandre Bill Lagada said his office had distributed seedlings to encourage backyard gardening among residents.

“When we experienced the effects of the pandemic on March, we were able to see the insufficiency of our food supply, which our Municipal Agriculture Office quickly addressed,” he said in the Laging Handa Network Briefing on Friday.

Lagada also said his municipality had transported goods to the mainland of the province to improve their income, but called on the Department of Agriculture (DA) to provide additional support to farmers to improve their production.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar promised aid to farmers in Dinagat Islands province and in Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte, in terms of marketing their products. Jojo Mangahis
