The Department of Education (DepEd) has canceled its bidding for P4-million worth of ham and cheese for its central office’s Christmas celebration after drawing flak on social media.

In a document dated Nov. 12, DepEd allotted P4.279 million for 4,260 pieces of ham and 2,160 pieces of cheese.

Netizens said the DepEd was “insensitive” for the bidding as parts of the country continued to suffer from the aftermath of typhoons “Rolly” and “Ulysses.”

“The call for bidding has been canceled,” the DepEd said on Saturday.

“It was regular procurement but it is inappropriate at this time when our employees are severely affected by recent disasters,” it added.

The document has since been deleted from the DepEd website.

“We have since reallocated the funds for the needs of those affected by typhoons “Rolly” and “Ulysses” and the ongoing Covid-19 effort for our employeesm” the agency said.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones earlier reported that the education sector recorded more than P5.6 billion in infrastructure damage due to the two typhoons. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
