The Department of Education (DepEd) on Tuesday said more than 28.7 million students have enrolled for school year 2022-2023, surpassing its target.

The DepEd reported that 28,797,660 students have enrolled as of Tuesday morning, which is more than its 28.6-million target.

Calabarzon has the most enrollees so far with 3,944,335. Region 3 and Metro Manila followed with 2,972,066 and 2,762,592 enrollees, respectively.

Public school classes opened on Monday, resurfacing old problems plaguing schools pre-pandemic such as shortages in classrooms and armchairs.

The government has also allowed schools under Alert Level 1 to relax social distancing requirements for the upcoming school year.

The DepEd has given schools until Oct. 31, 2022 to prepare for a transition to a schedule that contains five days of F2F classes.
