More than 2.8 million students have enrolled for school year 2022-2023 through day one of the enrollment period, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday.

Michael Poa, new DepEd spokesman, said the numbers for the first day of this year’s enrollment period greatly surpassed last year’s.

“Matagumpay ang enrollment. Maganda ang ating turnout, as of 7:35 last night, nasa 2.8 million na po ang nag enroll sa ating mga learners, mas maganda po ito kesa sa turnout last year dahil last year around 200,000 lang po ang nag enroll noong first day,” Poa said in a Teleradyo interview.

The DepEd is targeting 28.6 million enrollees for the upcoming school year.

Basic education classes for school year 2022 to 2023 will start on Aug. 22.

Schools will be required to implement five-day-a-week in-person classes by Nov. 2.

The upcoming school year will have 203 school days and end on July 7, 2023. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
