PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial said Saturday night the league would wait until August before deciding whether Season 45 would be shortened or cancelled altogether.

“Maghihintay kami until August to decide whether it’s still a go or a season cancellation,” he said in a teleconference with the league’s board of governors.

The board has also unanimously agreed to suspend any player moves in both the trade and free agent markets, according to the PBA website.

“The only transaction allowed is re-signing players whose contracts have lapsed,” the commissioner said.

On April 7, a month after the season postponement, the league announced it would shift to a two-conference format instead of holding all three — the Philippine, Commissioner’s and Governor’s cups.

Sport events are among the mass gatherings that remain prohibited under enhanced community quarantine and general community quarantine measures.

The verdict to cancel or resume the season will reportedly “largely depend upon” the government’s decision on lifting social distancing restrictions. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
