Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Romulo Valles, the archbishop of Davao, is recovering and is in better condition after suffering a stroke, a church official said on Saturday.

“I am happy to let you know that he (Valles) is getting back to his normal self in an almost miraculous way,” said Msgr. Paul Cuison, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Davao, in a statement.

Valles has a “slight problem of his physical movement” but is greatly improving, he added.

Cuison said the Davao prelate was hospitalized on May 23 and was discharged on July 6.

“The prolonged days in the hospital was due to some complications like hospital-acquired pneumonia,” he said.

The CBCP vice president, Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, was appointed acting president in the absence of Valles.

Cuison also said Valles celebrated Mass for his 69th birthday last week.

He said it was a private gathering held in the archbishop’s residence on July 10. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
