Ten new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) fatalities in the Philippines have been reported bringing the total number to 88.

The Department of Health (DOH) said Tuesday the Philippines has 538 new infections for COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 2,084, Meanwhile, the number of recoveries climbed to 49 after seven new COVID-19 survivors were reported.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the increase of new COVID-19 cases was due to the continuous testing of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) and six other sub-national laboratories nationwide. 

The DOH also revealed that 40 more hospitals and laboratories are applying for certification to conduct COVID-19 testing to further increase the government’s testing capacity.

The new all-Filipino fatalities were identified as Patients 798, 862, 935, 1,032, 1,240, 1,372, 1,419,  1,508, 1,680, and 2,045.

Patient 798, a 74-year-old male Quezon City resident with no travel history, died on March 29 due to community-acquired pneumonia and COVID-19. He also had pre-existing hypertension, diabetes, and cardiac disease.

Patient 862, a hypertensive 78-year-old male from Quezon City with unknown travel history, died on March 25 due to acute respiratory failure secondary to community-acquired high-risk pneumonia. His positive test results only came out a day after his death.

Patient 935, an 83-year-old male from Parañaque City with no travel history, died on March 29 due to acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to COVID-19. The patient also had chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and diabetes.

Patient 1,032, a hypertensive and diabetic 64-year-old female Manila resident with no history of travel, expired on March 27 to acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to community-acquired high-risk pneumonia.

Patient 1,240, a 51-year-old male San Juan resident with unknown travel history, died on March 28 due to numerous complications and COVID-19. The patient also had hyperthyroidism.

Patient 1,372, an 89-year-old male Caloocan City resident with unknown travel history, died on March 28 due to several complications secondary to COVID-19. The patient also had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.

Patient 1,419, a 69-year-old male from Quezon City with no travel and exposure history, expired on March 30 due to septic shock secondary to community-acquired pneumonia. The patient had hypertension and cerebrovascular accident infarct.

Patient 1,508, a hypertensive 72-year-old male from Rizal with unknown travel history, expired on March 26 due to fatal arrhythmia, hyperkalemia, acute kidney injury, and acute respiratory failure. His test results, however, only came out a day after his death which tested positive for COVID-19.

Patient 1,680, a 51-year old female from Rizal with unknown travel history, expired on March 24 due to acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to high-risk pneumonia, and severe acute respiratory Infection. His positive test results only came out a day after his death.

Patient 2,045, a hypertensive 60-year-old male from Quezon City whose travel history is still unknown, expired on March 26 due to acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to high-risk pneumonia.  (RJ Espartinez)
