Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines spiked to 11,879, after 258 new positive cases were reported by the Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday. 

188 patients or 73 percent of the new cases came from Metro Manila, 54 cases or 21 percent came from various areas across the country, while 16 patients or 6 percent were recorded in Region VII.

In a bit of good news, recoveries jumped to 2,337 with 86 more patients recovering from the infectious disease, according to the DOH’s daily bulletin. 

The death toll, on the other hand, slowly inched to 790 with 18 fatalities. 

According to the DOH, there are still 7,000 testing backlogs that will be distributed to 30 licensed laboratories in the country.

Singapore remains on top in Southeast Asia for the most number of COVID-19 cases at 26,098. Indonesia on its tail with 16,006 cases followed by the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the top 5 countries in the world with the most number of COVID-19 cases are the USA (1,430,348 cases), Spain (272,646 cases), Russia (252,245 cases), UK (229,705 case) and Italy (222,104 cases). (RJ Espartinez)
