The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is likely to extend the voter registration period beyond this month, its spokesman said on Tuesday.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the poll body’s en banc would discuss the extension on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

“After consultation with Comelec officials, and in consideration of the public clamor, it is likely that an extension of the period of voter registration will be granted,” he wrote on Twitter.

Voter registration for the 2022 elections ends on Sept. 30.

Lawmakers in the Senate and the House of Representatives have passed resolutions urging the Comelec to extend the registration period by a month.

According to the Comelec, about 60 million voters have registered for the 2022 elections as of June 2021.

It had projected a 73.3 million voting population. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
