The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced that it has exceeded its target number of new registered voters.

Atty. John Rex Laudiangco, Comelec acting spokesperson, said that more than two million new voters have been registered as of July 20.

“As of July 20, ito pong ating 15th day of registration, lagpas-lagpas na po tayo sa ating projected target, umaabot na po sa 2,119,878 ang ating mga nagpatala na bagong botante,” Laudiangco said in a public briefing.

“Noong una po ang inaasahan lang natin based on historical records ay aabot lamang sa humigit-kumulang isang milyong bagong magpapatala, lumagpas na po tayo doon…” he added.

Laudiangco said there are 1,325,415 new registered voters between 15 to 17 years old and 680,497 between 18 to 30 years old.

Moreover, there are 112,966 new registered voters for 31 years old and above.

The voter registration will end on July 23.
