The Manila City government is set to procure 110,000 tablets with SIM cards and 11,000 laptops with pocket WiFi devices worth P994 million solely for students and teachers as online classes in the city are soon to start.

Manila Mayor Isko Mayor confirmed the initiative on Friday evening after meeting with the Local School Board as part of the city’s preparation for this school year’s online classes.

Moreno said that he does not want kids to go to school without proper equipment for learning.

“We are the capital of the nation… I want you to focus all your effort on this,” he said.

Each educational tablet device will have SIM cards with 10GB bandwidth monthly as well as free 2GB data for YouTube.

“I want to focus on the real problem that they need bandwidth,” Moreno said.

Meanwhile, 11,000 laptops with pocket Wifi devices will be distributed to public school teachers for the online classes. These devices will be given prior to the opening of school year 2020-2021.

The Manila Public School Teachers Association (MPSTA) expressed its gratitude with the mayor’s decision to give free educational equipment for both teachers and students. (RJ Espartinez)
