A 45-year-old Chinese woman died when the motorized banca she was riding met a freak accident and sunk in the waters of Boracay Island on Tuesday.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Pablito, Malay police chief said the motorized banca “Jocelyn 1”, that carried 21 passengers, including the victim, Hong Fang Kwai, 45, was in the middle of an island-hopping tour when it was involved in a freak accident by the waters of Sitio Diniwid, Balabag village in Boracay.

The waters were described as “serene” when the boat sailed off from Station 3. “They were 21 onboard but when the boat was about to approach the shore, strong winds and waves caused the mishap. All were rescued except for one fatality,” Pablito said.

“We already requested for [an] autopsy to identify the cause of death,” Pablito added.

Three female Chinese nationals were transported to Ciriaco Memorial Hospital for medical assistance and are now safe from harm, according to Pablito.

Other passengers were unharmed.

The police report stated that some of the passengers riding the banca weren’t wearing any life jackets at the time of the accident. (RJ Espartinez)
