The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) on Thursday reported that 126 schools declared academic breaks due to the skyrocketing number of Covid-19 cases in parts of the country.
In a “Laging Handa” briefing, CHEd Chairman Prospero de Vera III said the number of schools was expected to increase by 123 towards the end of January.
“Noong nakitang aakyat ang Covid kahit na hindi pa nga nasa Alert Level 3 iyong ibang lugar ay nag-declare sila ng academic break – 126 [schools] – ang pinakamarami dito ay nasa [Metro Manila], nasa Region IV-A,” he said.
De Vera said that a nationwide academic break was not necessary because schools could declare the stoppage of classes on their own.
“So iyong panawagan nang academic break at iyong panawagan na mag-declare ng nationwide academic break ang CHEd, hindi na po kailangan iyan dahil kayang-kaya na ng ating mga pamantasan na gawin iyan on their own,” he explained.
The Philippines on Thursday recorded all-time highs of 34,021 new Covid-19 cases and a positivity rate of 47.9 percent out of 78,866 tests.
