Cebu-based supporters of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo have formed a coalition calling on her to run for president in 2022.

Wearing lavender ribbons as a sign of support to the vice president, at least 12 groups gathered in Cebu City, Tuesday, to form the Cebu Citizen’s Assembly (CCA) coalition.

The CCA promised to support Robredo’s candidacy and her presidential campaign in Cebu, a vote-rich province.

“Since VP Leni has taken her office, she has been true to her word that she would be of help to the marginalized women,” Akbayan Women Cebu statement reads.

Akbayan Women Cebu statement said that “communities of women” and other marginalized groups received assistance from Robredo despite his office’s limited resources.

“Even during this time of the pandemic, VP Leni had succeeded beyond expectations in taking action to provide assistance more than our present president has done,” Akbayan Women Cebu claimed.

The urban poor sector said it expected Robredo to help the poor and bring hope, especially to those families whose members were killed in alleged extra-judicial killings.

Different chapters of the Liberal Party (LP) also backed Robredo’s presidential bid to “bring real positive change” to the country, the party said in a statement.

“Your principled leadership and patriotism exemplified in your words, actions, family, and your social programs, is our only grateful light in this darkest life of our nation,” the LP’s statement read.

Robredo has yet to confirm her plans for the 2022 elections.

In the 2019 presidential elections, the Commission on Elections recorded 3,082,621 registered voters in Cebu, where Robredo bested former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Ryan Sorote
