Ilocos Norte has launched a cash-for-work program for daily wage earners who are currently not working due to the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) triggered by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Spearheaded by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), the program has a budget of P15 million for the first batch of beneficiaries with a possibility to allocate additional funds should the ECQ be extended.

“Itong cash-for-work program natin ay tulong para sa mga displaced daily wage earners (This cash-for-work program is an assistance given to those displaced daily wage earners),” PENRO program head Ms. Estrella Sacro bared.

She added that the program will greatly benefit public transport workers like tricycle and jeepney drivers since public transport has been banned during the ECQ.

The cash-for-work beneficiaries will be tasked in keeping the cleanliness of the surroundings, especially the maintenance of flood control and revenue-generating projects.

Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc wants to prioritize the sanitation and clean-up of surrounding areas such as rivers, creeks, coastal clean-up, and even the unclogging of canals and waterways.

The beneficiaries will be evaluated and recommended by their respective barangay officials and when chosen will receive a daily wage of P255.00.  (Jojo Mangahis)
