President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Court of Appeals (CA) associate justice Maria Filomena Singh as the newest associate justice of the Supreme Court (SC).

Singh’s appointment completed the 15-member roster of the SC.

She assumed the post vacated by former SC associate justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe who retired on May 14.

Singh, the sister of Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, became CA associate justice in March 2013.

She had served under several committees of the Supreme Court and is a faculty member of Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines’ (UP) law programs.

Singh practiced law for 10 years before becoming a judge in October 2002.

Singh obtained her bachelor’s degree from UP and her Juris Doctor degree from Ateneo.

She also studied at the Washington College of Law of the American University in Washington for a master’s degree in international legal studies.
