Cainta Mayor Kit Nieto has raised more than P1 million to be used as cash aid for workers displaced by the coronavirus crisis, by auctioning shoes from his personal collection.

Nieto has auctioned three pairs of shoes every day since his fundraiser began on April 14, and has collected P1,198,950 for workers not covered by the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Social Amelioration Program.

As of May 3, 599 workers have each received P2,000 in cash aid.

The mayor said the auction would go on as long as the quarantine measures remained in place or until his shoe collection ran out.

The city has recorded 276 confirmed Covid-19 cases as of May 1. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
