Presidential son and Davao City vice mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte is now the acting mayor of Davao city after her sister and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio filed a 60-day medical leave and designated him to take over her duties.

Her medical leave took effect on July 19 and will end on September 17.

Duterte, who is a neophyte politician, will take over from his sister while she recuperates from a “special medical leave”.  Various media outlets cite her leave was due to a “gynecological condition”, however the City Information Office has not issued any statement regarding this.

“We can only pray for her safety and or recovery from whatever illness that she is presently suffering,” Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said.

Due to her medical condition, Duterte-Carpio opted not to watch her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, deliver his State of Nation Address (Sona) last Monday.  Acting mayor Baste Duterte also decided to stay in Davao to watch his father’s Sona on TV. He cites his duty as presider of the City Council for skipping the Sona. However, his appointment as acting city mayor came two days before the Sona.

Third District Councilor Alberto Ungab is designated acting City Vice Mayor and presiding officer of the City Council, effective July 20.
