The designation of George Garcia as chief of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) was confirmed by the Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday.

Garcia represented now-President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. in his electoral protest against former vice president Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo who won in the 2016 elections.

Marcos Jr. named Garcia the poll body’s chairman in August. He was named Comelec commissioner by former president Rodrigo Duterte in March.

Garcia maintained that he would serve impartially despite having ties with several politicians including Marcos Jr.

“I will always maintain the impartiality of my office and that the institution will always be independent in all its actions,” he said.

Garcia will serve as Comelec chairman until Feb. 2, 2029. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
