President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law designating Antipolo City as the new capital of Rizal Province.

Republic Act 11475, signed into law last June 19, transferred the capital and seat of the Rizal provincial government from Pasig City in Metro Manila to Antipolo City.

Pasig served as the capital of Rizal province even after it became part of Metro Manila, which was established in 1975.

The Rizal capitol was transferred to Antipolo in 2009 after it vacated the “Kapitolyo” district that is now the Capitol Commons commercial development of the Ortigas and Co. property developer.

The bill was authored by Antipolo City Rep. Roberto Puno.

“Lubos ang ating pasasalamat kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte, sa paglagda ng batas na ito,” Puno said in a Facebook post.

The law will take effect in two weeks. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
