Cavite Gov. Jonvic Remulla on Tuesday announced that the province would soon mount a free WiFi system to provide students better access to online learning.
“I am very happy to announce that the Province of Cavite is about to embark in a massive rollout of a FREE WiFi system that shall cover (up to 90%) of the residential areas,” Remulla wrote in a Facebook post.
Remulla said that amid the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing lockdowns, the free WiFi system “shall be purely utilized for the educational or academic requirements of public school or DepEd (Department of Education) students which they can access using their ID number.”
Remulla said the investment was made to improve and make easier the access to research and knowledge materials.
“Once the economy overcomes its present challenges, the internet infrastructure can then be used as a tool for research, connectivity, online retail, and knowledge generation,” he said.
The governor also said he believed internet access to be “a right and not a privilege.”
“Our hope is that one day, the network becomes a beacon for empowerment so that innovation and collaboration can light up our beloved province,” he added.
DepEd recently moved the opening of school year 2020-2021 from Aug. 24 to Oct. 5.
Cavite has been under modified community quarantine since Aug. 4. It will revert to the less stringent general community quarantine starting tomorrow, Aug. 19. John Ezekiel J. Hirro
