Seven areas are still positive for paralytic shellfish poison or more commonly known as “red tide” the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) declared.

The national fishing agency released a shellfish bulletin on January 22 naming the areas that have paralytic shellfish poison beyond the regulatory limit:

  • Puerto Princesa Bay, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan
  • coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol
  • Irong-irong and Silanga Bays in Western Samar
  • Cancabato Bay, Tacloban City in Leyte
  • Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur

BFAR advised the residents that all types of shellfish and krill or alamang in Filipino from the said areas are not safe to eat.

Meanwhile, the coastal waters of Bataan (Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Hermosa, Orani, Abucay and Samal), San Pedro Bay in Western Samar, and Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar are now considered free from the toxic red tide.  (RJ Espartinez)
