690 health workers have signed up as volunteers to support all hospitals with COVID-19 patients, the Department of Health (DOH) as of 12pm Sunday.

Licensed doctors and nurses who volunteered as frontliners will be compensated with P500 daily for an eight-hour shift.

Meanwhile, the health department apologized for its statement a few days ago about offering P500 daily allowance to the medical heroes.

“This is not far from reality. I am also a doctor and our department knows how important it is to be a health worker especially during these times,” Vergeire said on Saturday.

The P500 allowance is part of the protocol based on the compensation given to other volunteers who helped other outbreaks in the past, according to Vergeire.

Vergeire added that the majority of the budget is allotted for the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPESs).

The supplemental budget approved by Congress to the DOH, on the other hand, is still under evaluation for its allocation.

“Now that the Congress has given us the supplemental budget, we will allocate these funds to important areas such as compensation for health workers, PPEs, COVID-19 response from Philhealth and improvement of health facilities,” she explained. (RJ Espartinez)
